In Jerome, Idaho this weekend on Sunday October 27th, a major crash involving a semi-truck, and two other vehicles left many injured and the roadway blocked. The crash occurred on I84 at milepost 170.
The semi driver, a 64-year-old man from Oregon, was driving a 2016 Freightliner truck westbound. As he was traveling, one of his tires began to fail, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. It slid towards the median and struck the concrete barriers, pushing them into the shoulder barrier of the eastbound side of the road. The truck then struck two other vehicles also headed westbound before it overturned and landed on its side, blocking the entire road. It then caught fire where it rested, stretched across the roadway.
The other two vehicles involved were a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The Tahoe was driven by a 27-year-old woman from Bellevue, Idaho. She had several other passengers with her, though the exact number isn’t given. Several of the individuals in this car were injured, and they were transported to a local hospital by ground ambulance.
The third vehicle, the Equinox, was driven by a 26-year-old woman from Twin Falls, Idaho. She did not have any passengers with her and was not injured badly enough to be taken to an emergency hospital at the time.
The driver of the semi-truck, 64-year-old man, was badly injured and was transported to a local hospital by air ambulance.
Traffic on I84 was blocked and then redirected for just under 12 hours. Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into this incident. There is no report given on the identities of any of the individuals at this time, or if any of the individuals were wearing a seatbelt.
We hope for a speedy and full recovery for all parties and individuals involved in this accident.
LIABILTIY FOR ACCIDENTS IN IDAHO
No one who gets into or drives a vehicle wants to be involved in an accident. But unfortunately, car accidents happen. Idaho uses a fault-based system to impose liability on the party most at-fault for the accident. A legal principle called “comparative negligence,” is applied to determine the negligence of all involved parties. If the Plaintiff’s negligence is less than 50%, then she generally can recover damages from the Defendant (or the Defendant’s insurance policy).
Our personal injury attorneys can advise injured persons about their particular case and how Idaho’s legal principles of negligence, causation, and liability apply to it.
