By Lane V. Erickson, Idaho Estate Planning Attorney
Maybe you’ve thought about estate planning. Perhaps you even got to the point where you’ve decided that you want to get your estate planning done. So, what do you do now?
When I talk to estate planning clients, I find that this is often where they are. They simply don’t know where to start to get their estate planning done even though they know they want to do it.
The good news is, I can help! I’ve been an estate planning attorney now for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve come to realize that everyone needs a way to start. To accomplish this, I’ve created a simple Estate Planning Questionnaire that I use with all of my clients to help them gather together all of the information that is necessary in order to complete their estate plan.
To make things even simpler, we provide the Estate Planning Questionnaire as a downloadable PDF document that you can type into and then save to your own computer. You can click on any of the links in this article for the Estate Planning Questionnaire to download it and to then have access to it on your own computer.
The Estate Planning Questionnaire is designed to walk you through the simple steps of gathering together your information. For example. Step 1 asks you to provide information about yourself, and if you are married about your spouse. Step 2 asks you to provide information about your children. After that we ask you to write down information about any other people that you would like to receive a portion of your estate.
We then focus a little bit on your kids to determine whether or not they are over or under the age of 18 and may need Guardians named for them. After that, we then walk you through some of the options available to you for estate planning such as having a last will and testament, a durable power of attorney, a power of attorney for health care, and a living will. There is also a section that provides information about what a trust is, and how they work, and asks some simple questions to help you determine whether a trust would be helpful for you or your family.
Even if you choose not to hire us to help you complete your estate-planning, I am confident that our Estate Planning Questionnaire will be helpful to you in gathering the information you need to complete your estate plan. We encourage you to download a copy of our Estate Planning Questionnaire and then to use it to help you complete your own estate planning.
We also offer a free 30-minute consultation to review your estate planning questionnaire with you. This allows us to answer any questions that you have, and to discuss with you in more detail what each of the options are and how they can help you, your family or your loved ones. We have helped numerous clients complete their estate planning. We are confident that we can help you too!
